ESIC Model Hospital, Ludhiana (Bharat Nagar)

History & Introduction

ESIC Model Hospital, Ludhiana (Bharat Nagar) is the only ESIC Model Hospital in Punjab, providing secondary care services to insured industrial workers and their dependents. Taken over by ESIC on November 1, 2002, it transformed from a 100‑bed facility to its current size. Bed occupancy rose from ~45% in 2002 to 100% today, reflecting its critical role in the region .

Infrastructure (Building & Facilities)

  • Current Capacity: Approximately 200–300 beds, with plans to expand to 500 beds under a ₹ 8–10 crore modernization project .
  • Recent Upgrades:
    • A new ICU ward was constructed on the ground floor at a cost of ₹ 73.03 lakh, as part of a comprehensive ₹ 10.58 crore renovation project .
    • Completed extension of medical‑gas pipeline, advanced fire‑fighting system (wet risers, sprinklers, alarms), and central air-conditioning infrastructure being installed .
  • Medical Facilities & Departments
  • Offers all general specialties—including Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, ENT, Dermatology, Ophthalmology—alongside a newly introduced AYUSH department (Ayurveda & Homeopathy) with outpatient services and 10 beds .
  • Also includes support services: Radiology, Laboratory, Operation Theatres, Pharmacy, CSSD, Dietary, Laundry, Housekeeping, Ambulance, Medical Records, Training facilities, library, and more .

Diagnostic & Laboratory Services

  • Comprehensive radiology and laboratory facilities as per ESIC Model Hospital standards.
  • However, reports indicate under‑utilization of key equipment (like ultrasound) due to staff shortages, leading to referrals of patients elsewhere .

Doctors & Staff

  • Specialist and medical officer shortages remain a persistent concern.
  • As of 2014, there were only six doctors, including two specialists. The institution has proposed hiring staff on contractual basis to fill gaps in the interim .
  • Current figures are not specified in publicly available sources, but challenges continue in maintaining adequate staffing across departments.

Pharmacy & Medicine Facility

  • Pharmacy services are offered in-house, managed under ESIC norms, but staffing constraints affect efficiency.
  • Additionally, housekeeping, support, and auxiliary services have been flagged in previous audits and inspections as insufficient .
  • Ambulance & Emergency Services
  • 24 × 7 emergency services are operational, but functionality is impacted by inadequate staffing and lack of equipment such as wheelchairs and stretchers .
  • Ambulance support is available, but many patients face difficulty in movement due to unreliable stretchers and absence of wheelchairs.

Patient Services & Management

  • Patients report confusion due to lack of proper signage, unclear room numbering, and inadequate waiting areas—leading to repeated staff consultations for directions .
  • ESIC officials have arranged to relocate dispensaries to expand OPD and ease patient management .
  • Steps are being taken to improve directional signage and streamline patient registration.

Safety & Hygiene Standards

  • inspections revealed lack of waiting areas, poor ventilation, inadequate cooling arrangements, and insufficient sanitation facilities .
  • Although recent upgrades aim to remedy these issues, no recent reports explicitly confirm resolution of hygiene concerns. Continued oversight is needed.
